138 B.C. The foundation of the city of Valencia as a Roman colony.
714 By then Valencia had surrendered under the Muslim rule. The influence of Islamic culture can still be seen in the city.
1238 King Jaime I defeated the Moors and redesigned the city.
1499 The University was established. Nowadays it has around 65.000 students.
1865 The city walls, built nearly 500 years earlier, were torn down. Serranos Gate is one of the twelve entrances into the ancient city and a well-preserved landmark in Valencia.
1957 Serious damage to the city and the death of at least 81 people were caused by the flood of river Turia. The government rerouted the river to prevent the tragedy from reoccurring. Nowadays Turia riverbed park is a place where you can enjoy outdoor sports and find beautiful architecture (the Music Hall, the City of Arts and Sciences).
8.000 m2 The size of the Central Market Hall, biggest of its kind in Europe.
792.000 The number of inhabitants in Valencia city. In the metropolitan area there are more than 1.5 million inhabitants. Valencia is the third biggest city in Spain, after Madrid and Barcelona
96.000 The number of “fallers”, registered members and active participates of the Falles. The Falles is celebrated every year in March, and its most central feature are ninots, big puppet figures, made by specialized craftsmen.

1996 The inauguration of the City of Arts and Sciences.
