Valencia is a diverse city that holds a proud heritage of hosting festivals in honor of the LGBTQ+ community. During the month of June, Pride month, Valencia hosts a colorful and bold celebration. The Valencian Pride festival 2023 focused on the theme of “Pride of all, rights for all.”

As the third largest city in Spain, Valencia not only is more affordable compared to larger counterparts like Madrid or Barcelona but is well-known to be inclusive. The open-minded, Mediterranean city offers a vibrant social scene of LGBTQ+ friendly bars, clubs, and restaurants. There are also multiple organizations in Valencia dedicated to providing support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Throughout the month of June, there were engaging events open to all – from seminars to movies, in efforts to educate and celebrate pride. The crowning peak of Valencian pride culminated to a massive parade beginning at the Paseo de la Alameda moving toward the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. The parade was a spectacular sea of colors, echoing with the sound of batucadas (drums), and packed with people of all ages & backgrounds. The electric energy of the parade displayed the resilient spirit of the LGBTQ+ community. Pride month in Valencia will conclude on June 30 with the 6th HIVsible Festival coordinated by the Anti-AIDS Committee of Valencia and the Centro del Carmen de Cultura Contemporánea.

While the LGBTQ+ community continues to pioneer past challenges, Valencian pride remains strong hosting incredible events that further contribute to Valencia’s inclusive society. In fact, Valencia is one of three finalist cities bidding host the Gay Games in 2026. The Gay Games is a cultural & sporting event for anyone over the age of 18 that focuses on “participation, inclusion, and personal best” (gaygames.org). Valencia is eager to host and has created a campaign #VLCForGayGames2026 in hopes of being selected.
